Immerse yourself in culture, discover local treasures
Capital Country is ripe for art lovers and culture vultures. Many notable artists and authors call the region home and for visitors, there’s art, antiques and collectables – both exhibited and for sale – everywhere you look.
Start your trip near Yass where you can wander through fields of lavender then shop for superb pieces in glass made by internationally renowned glass artist, Peter Crisp. In and around the Yass Valley, and closer to Canberra, discover the Poachers Way, a collective inspired by land and life. Spend some time exploring the trail and taste wine, graze on delicious food, admire artworks and be pampered in a day spa.
Search for that something special on the Queanbeyan Arts Trail, before heading to the village of Bungendore to see where wood artists from around Australia exhibit their wares. Follow the Kings Highway to Braidwood, where if you’re an antiques collector or just curious, you’ll find dozens of flourishing antique and bric-a-brac stores. The area is also famous for its quilts, and nearby Boorowa is renowned for wool crafts.
Catch a performance in the longest continually running theatre company in Australia in Goulburn, and follow the book trail to hunt for rare editions in the Southern Highlands, where you can also see and buy woodworks, ceramics, jewellery and metal craft.
So go on…explore the arts and culture of Capital Country. There’s no doubt you’ll return from your journey richer for the cultural experience, and with something beautiful to take home and treasure.
