Get back to nature
Capital Country offers nature lovers some very special experiences. Some are just a few steps from the car, others require more serious effort. Whichever options you choose, there are many natural wonders waiting to be explored.
See the sights on foot along the many bushwalking trails, tour spectacular limestone caves, fish in the streams where trout were first introduced to Australia, spot resident wildlife, enjoy the wetlands, rivers, lakes and forests or just take in the breathtaking vistas from many easily accessed lookouts.
Adventure begins in the Southern Highlands with a treetop walk along the picturesque Illawarra escarpment providing inspiring views. Continue on for more splendid views of the magnificent Fitzroy Falls , and venture a little further afield to explore caves at Wombeyan Caves, via Taralga, or Carey’s Cave at Wee Jasper. Stay as long as you like to survey the vast caverns adorned with striking and delicate formations, and in the evening settle in and get back to basics around a roaring campfire.
Drive to the Burrinjuck Waters State Park, via Yass situated on the banks of the Burrinjuck Dam on the Murrumbidgee River, for fishing, bush walks and boating. Googong Dam, just 10 kilometres from Queanbeyan, is a great spot for outdoor leisure with bushwalking trails, barbecue facilities, fishing and boating.
Discover the region’s many bushwalking trails, with tracks ranging from the mild to the more strenuous. Take in sweeping views of the Shoalhaven River and Morton National Park from Long Point and Badgery’s Lookouts at Tallong, and over the gorge at Bungonia State Conservation Area. Spot wildlife through the trails of the Bungonia
Gorge and escarpment, and stroll along the Mulwaree and Wollondilly River walking trails skirting the city of Goulburn to spot the shy platypus.
