THE number one selling duo in music history, the pioneers of rock’n’soul, Daryl Hall & John Oates are returning to Australia for their first national tour since 1991.

Joining them for what promises to be a truly bedazzling summer concert event is Australia’s own beloved and revered Icehouse.

The two musical trail-blazers will perform a series of a day on the green winery and indoor concerts nationally including Centennial Vineyards, Bowral on Saturday February 4. This is the first event to be announced for the 2011/2012 Bowral summer season and marks a new initiative being held on a Saturday night for the first time ever.

Promoter Michael Newton said: “We’ve received a lot of feedback over the years from patrons wanting the concert to be held on a Saturday night. The lack of availabilities at the winery on Saturdays combined with logistical considerations makes this difficult to achieve, but I’m pleased that we are able to make it happen this time. It means fans can travel and take the opportunity to spend a great weekend away in the Southern Highlands and all the locals can get a good sleep in!”

Keen music aficionados may well remember the link between these two fine acts – John Oates having co-written and sung on the Icehouse hit ‘Electric Blue’. Of course, they also share a legacy of an incredible musical catalogue, chart and radio domination and have inspired and influenced the musical environment of their time – and since!

Starting out as devoted disciples of earlier soul greats, Daryl Hall & John Oates scored six US #1 singles, ‘Rich Girl’, ‘Kiss On My List’, ‘Private Eyes’, ‘I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)’, ‘Maneater’ and ‘Out Of Touch’ from six consecutive multi-platinum selling albums. Along with ‘Sara Smile’, ‘One On One’, ‘You Make My Dreams’ and the sublime ‘She’s Gone’, they racked up a phenomenal 34 Billboard chart hits.

By 1987 the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) recognised Daryl Hall & John Oates as the number one selling duo in music history, a record they still hold.

The support acts for the concert will be announced soon!

EVENT INFORMATION: a day on the green is a fully licensed event. Strictly no BYO alcohol. Food will be available for purchase on site or BYO picnic. Picnic rugs & deck chairs are recommended.

For all show, transport, accommodation details and playing times, go to www.adayonthegreen.com.au.

Tickets available from www.ticketmaster.com.au and 136 100.

A group exhibition featuring the diversity of artistic approaches to printmaking and the roles of mentoring and guidance for emerging, new or established printmakers.

Opening Saturday 25th June at 2pm by Professor Margo Neale, Principal Indigenous Advisor and Senior Curator, National Museum of Australia. The exhibition runs until 3 August, 2011.

The exhibition will feature work from 3 prominent printmakers. Each artist selecting an emerging or associate printmaker that the artist has mentored or in some way offered assistance to the development of that artist’s journey in printmaking.

The Printmakers exhibition came about from several coincidental and unrelated ideas and happenings in and around the Gallery over the last year: the presence of Master printmaker Theo Tremblay on one of his flying visits to his second home of Bungendore from Cairns; the recent return to Canberra by printmaker Robyn Collier from British Columbia and her desire to again exhibit with the Gallery; and regular visits by myself to the very busy Griffith Studio and Graphic Workshop of the Gallery’s longest standing visual artist, Pamela Griffith.

All six artists in this exhibition are printmakers, teachers and people sensitive to their natural surroundings and the multi-cultural character of this great country. All acknowledge the priceless value of collaboration and learning from each other, and all will present work of exceptional quality and diversity that will make this one of the standout printmaking exhibitions in the Gallery’s near 30 year history.

Bowral, in the Southern Highlands of NSW can now lay claim to be the rightful home of Mary Poppins. In one of the most magical days anyone is likely to experience, 2115 umbrellas were raised for 10 minutes under beautiful blue skies to form the biggest ever umbrella mosaic in history, smashing the existing record of 1026 set in Subotica, Serbia in 2009. This was followed by a 5 minute dance (the Hokey Pokey) in an attempt on the Largest Umbrella Dance record.

Locals and visitors from around Australia and overseas were drawn to Bowral’s iconic Bradman Oval on Saturday afternoon to recreate the shape of Mary Poppins and to become part of an historical day of events in an effort to establish the NSW Southern Highlands town of Bowral as her spiritual birthplace and to celebrate her author and local Bowral resident PL Travers (1908-17).

Following the two world record attempts people were entertained by concert bands, singers and actors, plus an evening outdoor cinema screening of Disney’s 1964 movie Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke, capped off with a fireworks spectacular finale.

Event organiser and instigator Paul McShane, Vice President, Southern Highlands Youth Arts Council (SHYAC) said “I have worked on the Mary Poppins Birthplace project along with my daughter Melissa for some seven years but never did we imagine it could result in such a wondrous experience like yesterday. Having the three grandchildren of PL Travers, the author of Mary Poppins – Kitty, Cicely and Bruno – out here from the UK also made it very special, along with her longtime friend Patricia Feltham who had invited them.” Tourism was a big winner on the day as the event reinforced the position taken by Tourism Southern Highlands to position the area as a major regional tourism event destination. Tourism Southern Highlands Executive Manager, Steve Rosa said “this event has provided the region with a platform to create a possible annual ‘Mary Poppins Festival’ similar to that undertaken in Parkes for the celebration of everything Elvis. The staging of the world record attempt on Saturday will also assist our efforts to generate awareness of our region as the home of Mary Poppins and to also raise funds for the commissioning of a bronze statue of Mary Poppins in flight to be positioned in Glebe Park Bowral adjoining Bowral’s newest major tourist attraction the International Cricket Hall of Fame. The statue could become a tourism ‘Mecca’ for visitors and help us create new tourism experiences for the region.”

Tourism Southern Highlands and Wingecarribee Shire Council will work closely in the future with SHYAC to fully entrench Mary Poppins back to Bowral so that locals and visitors can be spellbound by this mystical figure and to grow tourism benefits for the region.

The Shed Sessions – Launch of Queanbeyan’s Latest Music Venue

Queanbeyan sees another piece of the creative mosaic of local culture cemented into place with the launch of the Shed Sessions.

The Artists Shed has been a well-kept secret, known only to an intrepid few who made the very short trek into Queanbeyan’s industrial heartland to discover a very strong, creative heartbeat. With a number of artist studios, an artists’ supply shop and an inviting gallery space, The Artists Shed is a thriving centre for the visual arts in Queanbeyan.

The Artists Shed is presenting afternoons of local live music, singing and music sessions – and in future, maybe some creative workshops in songwriting, instruments and vocals.

The Shed Sessions will provide a new musical venue for Queanbeyan – a venue that blends art and music – every fortnight on Sunday afternoons (with special concerts and workshops at other times).

Entry is by paper note donation. Doonkuna wines are also available by donation. Come along and enjoy local wines, local musicians and local art in a cosy, relaxed setting.

For more information call Ros Hales on 0438 768 754 or Tim Keeble on 0412 463 388.

Did you know that the creator of Mary Poppins, the world’s most loved nanny, lived in Bowral? There is mounting evidence that PL Travers actually came up with the idea for the magical Miss Poppins when she lived in Holly Street, just a few doors down from a young Don Bradman and nearby to Bowral’s famous Bradman Oval.

The Southern Highlands Youth Arts Council (SHYAC) is leading the campaign to have Bowral recognised as the Birthplace of Mary Poppins and you are invited to take part.

Here is an opportunity for you to be part of a world record-breaking team. Get involved by bringing your family and friends to Bradman Oval, Bowral, from 1pm on May 7, 2011, to participate in our world record attempt. We will form the shape of Mary Poppins on the Oval from people holding umbrellas. Expect to see it broadcast around Australia and the world. This is one of two records to be broken on the day!

Afterwards, stay for a night-time screening of Disney’s Mary Poppins movie, plus fireworks and other activities. The Welcome Home Mary Poppins event is taking place in the same week that the box-office smash hit Mary Poppins stage show, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney, officially opens its NSW season at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. The stage show has been a phenomenal success worldwide with almost 7 million people having seen it.

Don’t forget your umbrella!

An Exhibition of exquisite glass full of spontaneity, excitement and passion based on the artist’s forays into the sights, sounds and scents of Western NSW and Queensland.

Exhibition Opening and meet Keith on Sunday 30th January, 2011 from 11am. Exhibition runs until March 7.

Keith Rowe is primarily a glass blower but also enjoys working with sand and kiln casting. Keith has worked with glass for over 20 years and enjoys creating balanced forms with exciting decorative elements. Keith’s work is held in many public and private galleries in both Australia and internationally and he has won a number of international competitions and awards.

Over the years Keith has developed his own individual styles, often working on a body of works to produce a series. Working this way he can explore many ideas and discover new directions. One style often leads to another. As Keith explains, ‘There is so much to be done in glass that working on one series often leads me on a whole new path and to a new series of works.’
